I was blessed to see the Concertgebouw Orchestra with Maestro Chailly on tour in Hartford, Conn. some years back. They performed the Brahms Double Concerto, and the First Symphony. Such a fantastic orchestra, playing such great music. I love Brahms more than I do any other composer. To hear his music played by a world-class ensemble is pure bliss.

Anyone who thinks Brahms is a classical romanticist needs to listen to this intensely tragic romantic music--there is no way one could mistake B. for the other B--Beethoven. The level of emotional expression gives Tchaikovsky a run for his money--the difference here being that the 'tragedy' is not completely unleashed nor is it personal--so it is, yes, 'classically' held in check--but the 'romance/tragedy' is there for sure.
