I've been working my way into mikrotik since the beginning of global pandemic. I was enjoying the freedom with mikrotik products and picking up a new hobby. Couple of years later I've piled up a whole bunch of gears and am in a situation where I have more tiks than I can click given my capacity and capabilities. Although I'm not complaining, as I am still enjoying this hobby and hope to continue working on it (learning/breaking/fixing repeat) even if like a sloth or a snail. Oh BTW much of my most expensive tiks are acquired from EuroDK/Getic! #geticgiveaway

My MikroTik saga started after I canceled the old ADSL service, and got myself a nice FTTH connection. I was dealing with terrible ADSL modems, that my old ISP provided me with very limited feature set, and subpar Broadcom chipset that only gave me headaches and issues. My line had a lot of noise and it kept desynchronizing and they couldn't solve the issue. I even bought a TP-Link TD-W8970 v1 with Lantiq chipset because at that time I wanted to expand my networking knowledge and immediately replaced the stock firmware with OpenWrt. While that temporary solution worked for a bit, later down the line I learned that the hardware was just way too slow for a gigabit connection. While switching was fine and with the new firmware I had access at least to VLANs, it simply couldn't do hardware NAT due to proprietary acceleration blobs missing from the stock firmware. I was only getting little over 100Mbps and that was unacceptable.

Here's where MikroTik comes to the rescue. Obviously the only solution was to purchase something more powerful. I compared a bunch of routers, because I wanted to get the best bang for the buck network equipment in 2019. Did proper research and I decided to purchase a hAP ac2. The experience is just amazing! I never had a stable router like this little beast before. It is very small and compact, and infinitely configurable. Lots of knobs to turn for sure.

At first it was a bit overwhelming, but quickly left Quick Set section in WinBox. It had a lot of RouterOS updates and it did bring lots of new features like Wireguard that is one of my favorites. Firewall is very powerful and very similar to iptables. Supports tons of routing protocols and I also like the fact that MikroTik's entire product line should have almost the same feature set. Few differences here and there, but mostly it is the same.

USB port allows me to plug in all sorts of devices, from external storage to GPS receivers, it can control an UPS with an extra package or even plug in an Android phone in order to use USB tethering in case of emergency.

Still learning new things every single time and I am planning to stick with MikroTik from now on. Also would like to get hands dirty with the modem inside of the Chateau, make scripts that send you an SMS if connection drops, set up a failover and expand knowledge about cellular network, bands etc.
