Born during the chaotic Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history, Confucius believed that harmony could be promoted and achieved through the examples of sage rulers. He was also a innovative teacher, and tried to instill his principles of moral excellence in China's elite, but died without seeing his vision for his nation come to pass. However, his philosophies would eventually form the bedrock of Chinese culture, with many of his principles of tradition surviving to this day.

The important takeaway about Confucianism should be that it was the first humanistic and universalist ethical/philosophical system. No Gods. No deities. No other-worldly motives to justify ren/compassion for one's fellow human being, regardless of tribe, color, religion and background. It is based on pure HUMAN COMPASSION and HUMAN VIRTUE alone in regards to THIS LIFE and THIS WORLD.

I really enjoyed this video but it has left me sad. I never had a mentor or a teacher so while I am not a bad person I am also not a good person. When I come into judgement I hope for kindness and compassion and not justice. I am a long way from my home.

Bettany, why would Confucius still be considered a 'great thinker' when you just said he didn't rate women at all? It's a grim philosophy, perfect only to oppress people, which is exactly what it was used to do in the cruelest ways. Even Mao could see that.
