There are actually more than 140, 000 LLVs in service. They were a design breakthrough when they went into service in the mid 1980s, replacing the iconic DJ Jeep. They were designed to last 20-24 years under the most abusive duty you can put a vehicle through, but due to government ineptitude, many are over 30 years old and falling apart with no replacements on the horizon. The USPS has been trying to replace them for more than a decade with a design that meets current USPS needs, namely the switch from carrying almost exclusively letters, to a mix heavily biased toward packages. This is a huge undertaking with a projected cost of $6 Billion.
