Cold Steel Canadian belt knife first impressions

Here are my first impressions of Cold Steel's take on the classic Canadian Belt Knife by Grohmann Knives. It's a way more affordable version, but that doesn't mean it's cheap. I put it through its paces and got to know the weird shape of it. I like it so far, but I'll try it out further before doing a followup review.

Thanks cold steel for putting out excellent knife at a steal for a price. For someone who puts up beaver and other fur, dresses out big game this knife makes the job fun! The shape is what gave it the award. The 4116 steel sharpens beyond sharp. An old tough beaver can be skinned with 2or 3 strokes on a ceramic stick half way through.I can't get my buck 103 as sharp no matter what I use and it also is a good knife. Not great. The plastic case is washable and can be clipped on your pocket or belt or pack. Thanks again cold steel!!

I have the Cold Steal, and an old Herter's style knife. If you had to have one knife, you couldn't go wrong with this style knife. Get one and you will know.

I picked up the stainless Grohmann version of this knife during their Christmas sale. Can't wait to try it out this weekend.

It's your nickel, but It's always interesting to see what new brands of knife are being used in the field. If you like it, I may also get interested, since the Cold Steel is one of my favorite budget blades!!!

I have a Canadian belt knife style knife made in soligen, germany. I purchased this knife in 1969 at a store in Alexandria, VA. It is full tang, 1/8 steel, not sure type of steel, holds a great edge and love the shape deign. Paid $20 in 1969. 😊

Consider what the knife’s PRIMARY purpose was historically. This was a game processor. That was its one and only intended purpose. That explains not only its funky shape, but its light weight. Perfect if you’re skinning a dozen beaver and butchering a moose. It’s only us “bushcrafters” who want to try making it something it’s not.

seems to me that strange knife's appeal is mostly in its shape. Sure, if its sharp it has usefulness as knife and all but there is something in its shape thats appealing.

I've always imagined that the blade shape there is particularly suited for hunting-type purposes (i.e. skinning), although that's not something I have ever done (outside a laboratory, anyhow).

As for gloves, Hestra Falt Guide Glove, check at ray mears woodlore site, $130 Canadian taxes and shipping in, removeable wool liner and full leather outer.

It sucked at throwing sparks because the back was rounded off, not because it's stainless.

This is a light knife, that will take a wicked edge. If you want a survival knife, for chopping and splitting, get a bigger knife.

I have a Cold Steel and a Grohmann, and I like them both. Grohmann for deer, Cold Steel for garage.

Stopped watching when you said “I’m not going to reward them.” I’m sure Grohmann is heartbroken. If you want to do a decent review, review the original and don’t knock the company that designed the knife. Quit crying about them not emailing you back.
