Went into the bush to customize my brother's Shovel !

The Cold Steel Spetsnaz Shovel is one of the best piece of gear, but is even better with a few mods.
This mod is from Fred Perrin, knife maker.
Scrape off the varnish
Carve the handle into an oval shape - sensory feedback of blade's orientation
Thin out the protruding wood that digs into the soil
Sand off sharp edges on the wooden handle
Let it sit in boiled linseed oil - preferably mixed with turpentine
Round off the screws to prevent cuts on your hand
Sharpen the side with which you'll be chopping

When it comes to backpacking, hiking, and bushcraft, a shovel is one of the most versatile survival tools you can carry. This specific shovel is a 150-year-old design, a proven tool used by European military forces for over a century. While it may not be the lightest gear in your pack, it’s built for strength, durability, and multiple purposes.

In the wilderness, a shovel becomes indispensable. Whether you're digging a cathole for proper sanitation during a hike, or digging trenches to protect your camp from rain, this shovel delivers. It’s also perfect for managing campfires by moving coals safely and precisely, reducing the risk of wildfires. With its robust build, you can use it to split or chop wood in a pinch. And when it's time to extinguish your campfire, this shovel allows you to efficiently shovel sand or dirt into the fire pit to put it out.

Backpackers, bushcrafters, and survival enthusiasts appreciate its rugged design for handling tough tasks. A good shovel doesn't just dig—it helps you establish and maintain your entire campsite, from shelter building to fire management.

Whether you're on a long-distance hike, engaged in stealth camping, or deep in the wilderness practicing bushcraft techniques, this sturdy shovel is an essential part of your survival kit.

Ah, excellent! Perfect upgrades! And I think the hawk handle may also come with some kind of nasty sealer... probably poly... on it. So, like the shovel handle, you'll need to scrape it. I actually charred my entire handle, also, and coated it in my usual boiled linseed oil, tung oil, and bees' wax finish. 👍👍

I love my cold steel, too! Just a tip: replace the screws with screw-in eyelets. That way, you can take it apart without a screwdriver in a pinch.

Only for appearance sake?
Why?
To give gullible people the illusion you've used that shovel for years, and therefore so, sooo, experienced in the outdoors?
