Just a suggestion for anyone wanting to buy this one. Spend a little more and get a marlin 6 or 7 if you got the money. The bad part of the marlin 5 are the real bad Shimano Tourney components and if you want to upgrade the drivetrain you're gonna have to swap the rear wheel because it doesn't fit a bigger cassette.

Obviously, tourney is totally capable if you're just gonna ride it on the city and the ocassional dirt road, but if you're planning to upgrade a bike, look for the better marlins instead

I have the 2018 version I upgraded the stem, tires, dropper post, pedals and grips. It’s a solid bike

I just bought the same color, March '19... Mine in 19.5" frame (L) with 29's it will definitely take more abuse than I'll put it threw. I wanted a bike that can handle the streets and go off hard surface roads easier. I like the more aggressive look compared to the Dual Sport, The Dual Sport just looks like a commuter with a suspension fork on it.

How tall are you ? Also how does the seat feel I hear you can fully lower the saddle?

I am 5’8 and am interested in purchasing this bike however I’m hesitant Becuase I don’t want to sit too high and uncomfortable.

Love my marlin 4! Way irresponsibly upgraded but totally worth it! Mavic crossride wheels, upgraded to a raidon air fork with lockout (the suntour upgrade program is awesome), new pedals, new grips, slapped a sram nx eagle drivetrain on there and some four piston sram code r brakes. Most worthwhile upgrade is definitely the fork though, changes the feel completely in a good way, look for one with a 1 1/8" steer tube, air sprung and you're good to go! Guess I better find a frame for all these parts I have lying around! 😂

Glad to hear you got a lot of miles on it. Is it all with your 8yo son along though? What kind of trails are you riding? I see that you replaced the pedals but are you satisfied with the grips and saddle?

FWIW your review was instrumental in me putting a Marlin 7 on my Xmas list. I would have settled for a Marlin 5 or 6 but my wife came through and I woke XMas morning to discover a gray Marlin 7 next to the tree.

Does the internal cable rattle around inside the frame when going over bumps? My Dual Sport does, and it drives me nuts. Pretty much every Trek bikes in the store did the same thing when I took it back.

Mid winter no sale, you'd think no one buys bikes in the winter. After looking it's components .... it had 7 speed free wheel ... To upgrade you need a new wheel and entire new drive train... Damn I love the black painted version. But the fact it has a 7 speed freewheel on the back means if you want to upgrade drive train it will cost you way more then Marlin 6. If you won't upgrade to more speeds it's great.

I don't know much about bikes but what's the difference between this and a typical wal mart bike? I'm just looking for comfort and up right ergonomics.
