Wow, one of the solos in Stray Cat Strut uses this arpeggio and I never knew why.

This is really fascinating how you can build tension in a unique and underutilized way. Playing within the key is safe, but I find that safe leads to boring songs in my "creativity." The diminished arpeggio over the out-of-key chord brings more interest to a song.
