Kariba Dam RAZEL BEC1

The Zambezi River Authority is currently reshaping the plunge pool downstream of Kariba Dam. Since its construction in the later 1950's / early 1960's discharges through the spillway resulted in a plunge pool scoured out of excellent quality gneiss, 90m deep. By reshaping the plunge pool the intent is to better manage energy dissipation, arrest scour and improve dam safety. Razel-Bec, contractor for executing the works, produced this video. Engineering design was executed by Coyne et Bellier (now part of Tractebel Engineering), with supervision the responsibility of Stucky. Razel-Bec developed an innovative way to construct the cofferdam downstream of the dam by floating in concrete piers constructed in the day, which is demonstrated in this video.
