It makes up 70% of our universe, yet it still baffles us!

What Is Dark Energy?

Probably one of the greatest remaining mysteries in our universe, dark energy raises many questions within the scientific community. With so little information, why do we think dark energy really exists. Dr Becky Smethurst an Astrophysicist leads the team of scientists to explain what we know about dark energy.

I don't get what they're saying but I'm excited by their excitements.

I really enjoy the quality of these videos. Thanks for uploading such amazing content.

We need more video game speedrunners getting into this. If they can figure out some ridiculous glitch to skip half the game that you'd never figure out in a million years, they can figure out dark energy.

Reminds me of when I got in a little argument with a friend, he says we can manufacture dark matter already and it can make a huge explosion! I tried my dearest to tell him we can't even see the thingy yet, but he insists! Turns out he was thinking

Dark energy? Oh you mean Anti-Gravity.

Is it possible that the universe is only speeding up because we havent reached terminal velocity from the big bang? After an explosion things dont just emmediately start slowing down there is a time (though small) where the thing that exploded are speeding up before it starts to slow down. Im sure this has been thought of amd ruled out.

From a very young age I was asking a simple question that everyone laughed at. I am still asking that question. I admit I have not been the only one to be made fun of. That question was, "if the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into?" My point is that it is quite possible that 'the space that is non-existent until it has been expanded into' is actually not completely 'inert' - although that might not really be the right word- but full of stuff that when interacting with our expanding universe takes on the nature of dark matter and speeds up the process of expansion. Could this be an explanation of the phenomenon that was of course unknown when I was a child?

Your video is fascinating and i enjoyed it much.i have an idea about dark energy and i know exactly that some people may think i am an idiot. You know light is a fastest thing in the universe accoding to our knoledge. The light is indeed a kind of energy. Dark energy is also a type of energy which we are believing and we know the fact galaxies are moving in a great speed exeeding the speed of light. Then we can think that speed of dark energy may few times be higher than speed of light..so we can speculate that as visible light and other parts of electro magnetic spectrum are gathered by our telescopes, rays of dark energy exceeding the speed of light would also be caught so that new information would be detected. Thank you so much.

I think it is a wrong name.It is supossed to be Invisible Energy and Invisible mater, by the time they discover true nature of it

what if the universe is simply a balloon and a very large 4+ dimensional creature is inflating it for fun.

I have no idea what they are talking about. Middle of my scalp is hurting.

While dark matter is invisible it's not inaudible. Sympathetic harmonics can be used to pinpoint it's location.

Dr Becky Smethurst is very clear & skilled at explaining things. Good job BBC

However, Nobel prize winner Perlmutter is confusing: 1:28 _"They brighten as a firework & fade way & they reach the same brightness & you can then use that as an indicator of how far away it is, just by looking to see how bright it appears to you."_ So they reach the same brightness but they are not the same brightness?
