Took me a year of studying a couple hours a day, while working full time as a bus driver picking up every extra thing I could.

Spent roughly two years in IT before getting my first DevOps related positions. Loved computers all my life, studied while working on average about twenty minutes each day (sometimes three hours, sometimes zero). If you want it, my silly self is proof that you can get it given enough effort!

To be politically correct. DevOps is not an acutal role in IT. It's a cultural method working in an agile way usualy part of the software development process. On the Developer side you have Software Developers. On the Operations side you have System Administrators, System Engineers. If you work on the operations side you need a previous Systems Administration background working as a Systems Administrator because Sysadmins collaborate with the developers in an agile way. Some times they are called DevOps Engineers despite that they are really Sysadmins since job titles in IT can be very ambiguous. Generally you start out at the Help Desk or Desktop Support before moving into a system Administrator role and then you skill up in cloud computing skills, coding and automation skills and you find a company that works in an agile DevOps way of automation.
