I had this problem, I created a bucket called large item purchases for things like a new roof, ac, and car. It limits the max you can spend on all these items and also gives you freedom to spend when you have the money.

Include line items in your budget for car and home maintenance. When you plan and budget for it, you will be at peace when you have to spend on those items.

Some of us just dont want to outlive our money. If there were a baby step 10, I would be there, but Im 46 and will probably live another 46 years. A lot can happen in that time. You can live a good life and be frugal...sometimes it's more fun to be frugal really. But yes...there is a big element of fear. In my twisted mind, if you are under 60...you'd better have 3mm+ if you dont want to outlive your money. Overly cautious? Maybe. But the alternative is much worse.

This has been the year of regret purchases for many. But you and so many other people are hoarding their money. I can't even convince my wife about taking a vacation due to Covid fears.

This is not a money problem. She has been gazelle intense for a very long time. She has earned being able to spend money.

Seriously, all she needs to do is work her monthly budget on paper every month without fail (like we all do on the 1st), and simply set up SINKING FUNDS at Ally Bank in HYSA's & laddered CDs for everything else, e.g., Next Car; New HVAC; New Roof; Water Heater; Vacation Fund; Christmas Fund; Fence and Landscaping; Property Tax Fund; Annual HOA Fund; Annual IRA Contribution Fund. Done and done. The money left over is discretionary spending money guilt-free.

Ouch she paid cash, could have bought the house for 40% less had she took out a mortgage years ago and paid off the house faster by now with money left over
