WTF Happened To This Movie? – The JoBlo series that looks at troubled productions, curious creative decisions, box-office failures, surprising successes, and cult favorites!

In 1986, long before the Avengers assembled on the big screen and transformed the Marvel Cinematic Universe into an unstoppable Hollywood juggernaut, a significantly different comic character marked the first live-action Marvel feature film: HOWARD THE DUCK. But not even George Lucas, along with his AMERICAN GRAFFITI and STAR WARS collaborators Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz, could turn this wise-quacking waterfowl into box office gold. All that despite a score by John Barry, songs by Thomas Dolby (and sung by star Lea Thompson), a young Tim Robbins, Jeffrey Jones , the voice of Chip Zien and more! Ruffle your feathers and find out "WTF Happened to HOWARD THE DUCK!"

Say what you want, I still love this movie. It was one of my favourite movies as a kid, and still withstands the test of time as a silly 80s adventureflick. And of course there's Lea Thompson, who, as always, is just awesome!

Look, i loved this movie when i was a kid. Dont understand the hate, sometimes bad movies are good, because they have some kind of magic.

If you had to show someone what the rating system was like in the 80's, this is a good example of PG vs PG13. For reference this movie is PG. Also Lea Thompson was one of my first big screen crushes.

Great movie, loved Lea Thompson. She was one of several 80's actresses who never got a fair break.Ironic that without Howard The Duck, Pixar might not exist.Think about that one. They owe Howard big time.Still a great movie to me.

The movie was the first and only comic book Adaptation by Lucasfilm, as it bombed at the box office, making $37 million dollars against a $30 million dollar budget. It was panned by Critics upon Release. It has developed a cult following, going into the So Bad it's Good category.

The Dark Overlord in his true form was enough nightmare fuel for any little kid.

The cult classic to remembered the gold old times even movies and television back from the 1980's.
Howard the Duck is indeed a BOX OFFICE BOMB but for us fans A CULT CLASSIC even
it's rotten and very entertaining. I hope MARVEL and Disney could create a PG-13 movie soon.
Wanna see him being crude, rude and almost resembling Donald Duck. GREAT VID, JOBLO!

The truth though.. that soundtrack is the bomb! Thomas Dolby and George Clinton! Lea Thompson sang her butt off!

Huyck's young daughter running away from Jeffrey Jones was probably the safest option.

If the idea of a talking duck playing in a Rock band & getting seduced by Lea Thompson seemed normal to you - you were probably a kid in the '80s.

_Howard The Duck_ would later be remade as Ryan Reynolds' _Green Lantern._ *It's the same movie.*

*I don't know ANYTHING about the comic. It had a VERY short run in the 70's and before I was born. So when this movie came out I was FLOORED. (VHS cult following guy is me). For this reason, I saw the movie for what it was, a live action duck that rivaled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in it's expressiveness and life like motions. From the prospective of a 12 year old, this movie was GREAT; the special effects (I don't care what the Razzies say) were good, and were really sold by Jeffrey Jones impressively menacing portrayal, and Howard made me think, someone short, awkward, and smart mouthed could "eventually" get a girl like Lea Thompson (an uplifting message if you're a short, awkward kid who doesn't even have a beak and feathers). As for what it did to set back "the industry", I gotta say, the live action, Thor, Hulk, and Spiderman movies did most of the damage LONG before Howard showed up.Howard may have pissed off a bunch of comic fans (I can understand why) but he did a great job introducing sci-fi to kids who 10 years later, bought Marvel movie tickets*
