Have to agree with you on most of your points. I caught the metalworking bug from my machinist Grandfather, and took it up as an occasional hobby at age 16. Am 59 now, and am getting back into the hobby before I retire.

I agree in full with what you said ! But you only showed the tip of the iceberg, you just showed us that poor bits you only have got after ( probably ) years of machining ... lol
The bill payed is much and much longer, believe me ( an hobbist from Italy ).
But ... it's love, the true one ... no any excuse needed !
( i'm seeking for a mini mill also ... )

Which lathe do you have, and from which seller did you buy it from?

I hate it when reality sets in but being as frugal as i am, i have to accept it.
I love tools and have lots of them, anvils, forges welders etc ....but never had a I want one :)
that was a really good piece :)

Very good synopsis of the roundy - round metal munching habit, with the required 'gotta have it's ' ;)
* Although, enterprising scroungers can make do with much much less !
My little sister asked me, ' How many tools do you NEED ? ' I instantly replied ; "ALL OF THEM ! ! ! " - PLUS the ones that they can MAKE !
The 'big bore' MX - 210v lathe KIT is a strange animal, unlike it's smaller - holed brethren, it's got a 56 tooth spindle gear . . . instead of the common 40 tooth . . . which makes the threading chart completely WRONG ! ** Add 100 dollars for a set of gears, plus many hours of calculator time to work out the ratios that allow cutting INCH threads on a METRIC lead screw lathe - FRUSTRATION CENTRAL ! ! ! &&& It's no small wonder that quite a number of 'new machinists' are taking up CNC . . . with the advent of computer controlled lead screws to eliminate gearing . . . ( YEP ! ! ! MONEY PIT ! BUT - it's a nicety that is catching on . . . )
I'm a die hard 'old schooler' . . . & I think my lathe KIT is going to end up with it's own 'custom made' quick change gearbox ! I'll just modify the gearing as required - to end up with a useable configuration .
* Gear cutting is on my list of 'to do's' . . . Got a dividing head, got an adjustable angled vise, but no mill . . . ** yep, on the list ! METAL MANIA ! Thanks for the video reminder $ COTT !
