Tornados, summer storms leave path of destruction in Northeast l ABC News

Reported twisters caused damage through parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, injuring at least five people, with more severe weather hitting parts of Virginia and Ohio.

I lived in tornado alley for years. I knew people personally who were killed, kids that were sucked out of minivans, and lots of people who were in really close scrapes. I watched 30 foot trees whipping the ground violently in my front yard (dug shallow trenches) and realized my house was keeping us dry but couldn't keep my family alive if it were hit directly. The advice people give is to "stay away from windows". This would work about as well as "duck and cover".
Tornadoes came through once or twice annually within 10 miles of my house though they didn't always hit the metro areas. The locals took tornadoes in stride like any other annoyance, but I had really vivid nightmares that finally ended about six months after I moved.

I was on the PA TPK just before the twister passed in front in my suv while approaching the Philly Toll Plaza at Rt 1 and Rt132, and hit the Faulkner Dealaership in Trevose Bensalem Bucks County PA. It was real insane. All traffic came to a dead stop at this time as the twister passed over the TPK. We all felt the high side winds as it barreled though. It was only a few feet away but we were just safe enough to not be in its direct path. We could see it and hear it though like a freight train or pressure roar.
