Modded Peavey 6505+ Playthrough: (plus 5150 vs 5150ii switch)

Here's a playthrough of my modified Peavey 6505+

(Detailed description of the mods below)

Cleans: Now truly a Fender type clean, very glassy and bright. The bright switch was changed to make the channel not as dark when disengaged, but still different enough and usable.

Crunch: Much more of a Marshall feel. Not really anything like the stock green channel and a little lower gain. This channel is now lower in volume as well to match up better with the clean volume.

Lead: This is where most of the modding took place. The original idea was to convert this amp to be as close as possible to the Soldano SLO, which is what the 5150/6505 heavily based on. I started off getting the lead to 5150/6505 spec, and then some tweaks got it as close as possible to the SLO. The mids are much thicker sounding, the low end is chunky, and the treble is not nearly as harsh and fizzy. The switch you see is part of a revision I did, and that switches between the 5150 preamp with SLO mods, and the 5150 ii preamp with SLO mods. Basically a 5150/5150 ii switch and the overall amp was made to sound more like the Soldano.

Presence: I raised the frequency that the presence works at on both channels quite a bit. There is a lot more clarity and high end bite and air now.

Resonance: I did lower these on both channels by nearly an octave which was a ton of fun when just playing through a cab. The amount of deep, punchy low end was insane and put just about any amp I compared it to to shame. However I found that it was too deep and boomy for recording purposes, so I changed it back to stock.

Over 3 minutes of clean guitar and I start to feel uncomfortable lol.

It's not based on just the SLO, it has VTM DNA primarily, then goal was to get it close to the Marshall Jose modded amp EVH liked, but that amp never materialized when James Brown was designing the 5150, hence the VTM being the original base circuit. The cascading gain staging in the preamp is the idea that came from the SLO.

Summery:
SLO distortion but wth an extra gain stage.

Modified VTM preamp EQ.

Added resonance control from the Peavey Vintage amps (clean amps).

Buffered EX loop

Still love the 7581A's in my JCA 50H. Loved the cleans man. Looking to grab a 6505 soon.

I dig the audio and the playing examples for the amp demo.

I hate the 22N coupling cap after V1B in the og 5150. Makes things way too thick sounding. Peavey made a good call switching that cap to 1N like most of their amps. Makes it more dynamic and clear sounding.

I like what you have done here in your mods and either making a new headshell or re-tolexing the original in White, I like that..I have a 5150 Signature head and have though of making the headshell and doing it in Ivory or white to match my EVH 2-12" and 4-12".

You wouldn't be able to give me a rundown of all of the changes and what they each change would you? Already did the 6505 style lead channel mods on mine and cut out a resistor on the clean channel (can't remember it might have been c27 or something) to remove the boxy sound. Edit: I should add I don't really care for the switch cause I'm not a fan of the 6505+ lead channel

I think I'll do a permanent 6505+ to 6505 mod. they took too much low end out for sure. sounds like a tubescreamer. any suggestions on which components to grab?

I always liked the II better. Just more clean and not so buzzy

I presume that switch jumps the 470pF coupling cap with the SLO/5150 treble peaker? Had been considering this myself, good to hear the result

Where did you get the switch mod done to the lead channel and how much does it cost? Or is it something you did yourself? Thanks in advance.

Alright, where did you bury that shit clean channel when you replaced it with this wonderful one?

It's hard to get a chimey clean out of amps that have 4 gain stages on the clean/crunch channels. :/ Alot of amps dedicate one tube (2 gain stages) to the clean channel.

Hey man, love the mods. Could I possibly email you a couple of questions regarding a 6505+? Primarily asking for some insights on a few specific points of interests? If it is not a public account, feel free to pm me on here. Looking forward to your feedback! Thanks for your time.
