In August of 1971, before I'd read about the Cannonball, I drove my 1968 Renault 10 solo from Detroit to New Orleans in 19 hours. The Renault 10 had a 1.1 liter, 48 hp engine. It did 86mph with AC on and 92mph with AC off. Gas was 24.9 cents/gallon. It got 35mpg at top speed and the trip cost under $10. Maybe I would have won an under 50hp Cannonball.

I actually drove a Yaris from North Carolina to Anchorage Alaska with three 17 foot touring kayaks (and two other paddlers and all our gear) on the roof. we didn't do it in 50 hours though.

Stock 1987 Chevy Sprint Turbo, less than a year old. 3 cyl. 900cc, 92hp... I did NOT know it was a Cannon Ball Run, I was just letting pace behind a small pack of cars and... It was the 2 FHP motorcycle cops with radar guns, 4 SVO Mustangs, a Corvette and Camero all in FHP colors with a helicopter hovering over I-10... That's when I clued in that I was in a race, that and my speedo banging between 30-40 like it was about to just start spinning. Two semi's we're right behind me and I got off at the Starke exit. The people in the Trans Am and an old guy in a Jag came over to look at my engine. 3 cylinder, 900cc, intercooler, turbo charger, stock with the AC on and the radio playing, I hit 132mph. Ralph Nader said it read more dangerous than a Convair or VW Beetle. Best car I ever had.
