In India’s Assam state, 1.9 million people are facing a battle to prove they belong.

They are suspected to be foreigners after the state created a National Register of Citizens, demanding that anyone not on the list prove their citizenship.

Most of those fighting to prove their citizenship are Muslim, prompting claims that authorities are falsely branding them illegal migrants from Bangladesh in an attempt to appeal to hardline Hindus.

Many now live in fear that they could be deported or sent to detention centres and made stateless.

101 East investigates their desperate quest to prove who they really are.

A real Assamese knows the threat,
Would love to see if Qatar govt accepts any migrants from other countries in large number and give them citizenship.

None of the people you took interview could speakn Assamese. This is the threat the indigenous people of Assam is facing today. Without knowing the gravity, it's useless to make biased videos. You should better focus on Qatar news

I am from Assam and belong to the Goria Muslim Community of the state of Assam.
The case of Bangladeshi Illegal Migrants is very complex. They have assimilated so much within the greater Assamese community, it's really difficult to find and deport them.
You need to know 3 things to get the whole story
1. NRC 2. IMPACT OF CAA BILL IN CONTEXT OF ASSAM 3. ILLEGAL INFLUX OF BANGLADESHIS FROM 1971 TILLDATE

What about the indigenous people of Assam? They are becoming minority in their home land, these suspected foreigners can't even speak any indigenous languages. Indigenous peoples right also matter.

Dear al jazeraa, the mother language of Assam is Assamese. The people you taking interview are not speaking Assamese, they are speaking Bangla. You should go more deep into this topic.

I am from assam and it has been a long struggle for us. This is not about religion.

How many rohingyas did QATAR accept?? illegal immigrant bangladeshis are changing the cultural demography of assam. It's obvious bangladesh won't accept them. Better to keep in detention

But the same law is not applied in TRIPURA state.
Because most of the people illegally immigrated from Bangladesh are Hindus.

Assam would have been a rich and beautiful state if there was ILP or some land protection act like other North eastern states of India.. But now sadly the demographics have been changed by outsiders. Hope for betterment 👍🏻

Cutoff of 1971 is wrong in itself since India gained independence in 1947. The number of foreigners are much more than 2 million. The human rights of indigenous people have been ignored where they have lost political, economic opportunities and have become minority in their own land.

Al Jazeera ( Funded By Qatari Govt) kindly made a documentary how illegal Bangladeshi Migrants entered in Indian territory and change the demographics, and another documentary on Love Jihad

its hard to see poor people suffering, but demographic change for original Assam people is painful too. Like native Americans, we do not like to be turn minority in my home land and outnumbered by other race ..

For anyone who don't know,
No Bangladeshi wants to be called Indian and no Indian wants to be called Bangladeshi
