Education Session 17 - Game-Changing Approach to Greater Performance Outcomes
Speaker: Jeff Hoye, Senior Leader, Organizational Strategy, CPS HR Consulting
Description: Are you aware of the growing trends in gamification? Wikipedia defines gamification as the use of game thinking and game mechanics in non-game contexts to engage users in solving problems. CPS HR will present a game-designed approach aimed at providing increased customer satisfaction and higher levels of employee engagement. This novel approach to improving departmental performance is underpinned by the growing gamification trend in the private sector. More and more leading edge private organizations are using gamification to engage employees in tackling business problems and other typically dry business activities. Public sector agencies could harness this idea to not only improve the customer experience, but also increase learning opportunities for employees - especially Generation Y employees, who are constantly on the hunt for meaning at work. Because millennials grew up playing computer and video games, it’s natural that they would be drawn to something gamified, where they are recognized and win points for completing different tasks. According to Wharton management professor Kevin Werbach, workplace gamification must surpass Gartner’s “M3” explanation and instead feature eight aspects to promote business success: problem solving, exploration, teamwork, recognition, success, surprise and novelty, creativity and knowledge sharing. Schawbel and others who have been studying and writing on the changing workforce are telling us to get ready for the major shifts that will be taking place in the next ten years. Admit it. You must be curious to see how a team of employees could get excited about taking a game-designed approach to increase departmental performance and customer satisfaction.
Expected Outcomes: Participants will learn about a new, game-designed approach to improve performance, increase customer satisfaction, and increase employee engagement. You will be shown the many ways they are currently participating in game-designed scenarios today, and may not even know it. You will learn of examples today where game-designed approaches are being used (both within CA state government as well as other state governments in the US. Three actions they can take the day after attending this session.
