Nerdy Cleveland native Gaetano Proclo (Jack Weston) is on the run from a Mafia brother-in-law (Jerry Stiller). He seeks a calm, safe and private place to hide and ends up at the Ritz, an all-male bathhouse of very loose virtues and very high camp. Among the colorful characters Gaetano meets is aspiring entertainer Googie Gomez (Rita Moreno), who thinks that he is a famous producer, while he mistakenly thinks she is a man in drag.

In 1976 a group of us went to see this movie not knowing anything about it. It was the funniest movie I had ever seen up to that point. I have never heard a theater erupt into laughter as much as I did then. In fact we were still laughing as we left . I wish more people knew about this movie.

It's not easy to purposely be that bad. She did a great job at it. The shoe flying and wig moving are my favorites.

I saw the Broadway play with Ms. Moreno and a funnier afternoon in the theatre was never had. Not surprised she won the Tony Award for this.

My mother and I would watch The Ritz in the 1980s. Countless times. Those were the days when you rented a VCR for $15 a night because to buy a VCR cost around $1800. We splurged once a week. We never stopped laughing.
Rita Moreno was phenomenal. Googie Gomez.
