Fractals aren't just fascinating computer generated patterns, they could also be the key to future computer architecture. Professor Phil Moriarty explains.

Thanks to Noah Hardwicke for the Christmas Card

It crazy how prof Moriarty explains things, because when you hear him speak and see him so captivated by this topic, you immediately become much more interested and listen with much more care! Thank you!

I just love how prof Moriarty explains things, and especially in this video when he conects ideas that I'm familiar to me but otherwise I would not have connected that way. I'm an architect and I love studying the larger scale - the cities - and I'd never thought of a city growing in a fractal way just like he put it. I'm thinking of slums, which there are plenty of where I'm from. Slums are more of a trial and error type of making cities, much more flexible and way richer in terms of human scale and human interactions compared to 'the formal city'. But yet designers (and politicians) keep on making bad decisions regarding new urbanisms. To me, a city is like a giant house. Residential areas are bedrooms, public space is the livingroom, etc.
Yes, completely off topic and bad English, but that's where my wiring took me.
Thanks professor and Sean!

Brilliant video!

So, greetings from Germany, keep up those great videos. Love it !

Dear Professor Phil Moriarty, Man if you're ever in Dublin I'll buy you a pint. I couldn't hope to have a sensible conversation about this stuff but you certainly deserve a mineral water.

I've always wondered what fractals really were, thanks for such an awesome explanation!

When you don't know in which category to put a video, like Computerphile, Numberphile, Sixty Symbols, then you know it's gonna be interesting.
And to say a physicist is no mathematician is like saying a neurologist is no real doctor ^^

Why does everyone hate Professor Moriarty? People are vaguely referencing his political beliefs, fallacies, etc. etc. but aren't giving any straight reasons. Regardless of his political beliefs, it has absolutely nothing to do with the video. He does a good job doing what he was expected to do for this video. Giving a dislike would be misleading if it had nothing to do with the video.

So... If I understood the bit at the end right it's something like this:

1. Make fractal like pattern of molecular wires
2. A governing system feeds it 1+1=?
3. If the pattern answers anything other than two, it throws it away and restarts at point 1. Otherwise continue.
4. Hey! It knows 1+1=2! Let's see what else it does!
5. Feed it "Hamlet is a ?"
6. If it responds with something intelligeble. Then continue with more complex tasks. Otherwise, keep reiterating the blob of wires.

Is this correct?
