Stars record a tribute album to Henry Mancini

In honor of the composer's centenary next year, the family of Henry Mancini has been recording a tribute album featuring some of the Oscar- and Grammy-winner's most beloved music, performed by some of the most celebrated artists today. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with flutists James Galway and Lizzo, who are putting their paws on the "Pink Panther" theme; and Michael Bublé, recording the song that Audrey Hepburn made famous, "Moon River."

Henry Mancini is one of the greatest composers in the history of popular music. "Moon River", "Two for the Road", "Charade", "Sweetheart Tree", "Thorn Birds" Theme, are all unforgettable, melodious music. There are his inventive "Pink Panther" theme, "Baby Elephant Walk" from the movie Hatari, and many other movie and television scores that are simply delightful. Thank you, Mr. Mancini for creating such glorious timeless music!

A week ago my 11 year old granddaughter interviewed me for a class assignment on the 60’s. I had to confess that the music I listened to the most were movie soundtracks. I then told her about Henry Mancini. She looked quizzical, then I started the Pink Panther theme and she joined in. Generations united. Two For The Road is my favorite and the Sweetheart Tree is my ear worm.

He was amazing. Amazing scores for films. And as a bonus, I'd say he composed 3 standards: Moon River, Peter Gunn Theme, and the Pink Panther Theme. Along with many other great instrumental tunes.
