The Fall of UMass Football…

When UMass chose to move from the FCS level up to the FBS level the timing felt off. They were coming off a stretch where they were not one of the top FCS programs in the nation and looked to be on the decline. Rather than make the move after losing the 2006 FCS Championship game, they chose to wait six years. Since they moved to the FBS level they have left and returned to the MAC, they have a record of 24-112, have never had a winning season, and have scorned both their fans and students destroying any type of tradition and culture for football Saturday. This is how UMass became the worst FBS football program. This is the story of the worst decision ever made in college football.

My alma mater (Liberty) made a mistake signing a 10-game home and home series with UMass. We whoop them every year and it's gotten very stale playing them.

When ncaa 25 comes out I am thinking about making a New England wing of the MAC with team builder to make New Hampshire, Vermont and maybe UConn

As a UMass fan it's been a frustrating run, but I think joining the MAC will give bring stability to the program. Hopefully a facility improvement project will come soon.

The thing with umass is that they do get good couple players every year ( underrated guys ) but just not enough… can’t have solid receivers but with below average lineman and qbs. Just my opinion

I am from Massachusetts and it is laughable how bad UMass is. You would think they would be able to call the top talent from a densely populated state, but no.

Idaho in the long run has been better off dropping back to the FCS level. One can only hope UMass does the same

UMASS is going to be my rebuild team for College football 25. This team has been poorly run and whoever but Preston Garvey himself to lead the minutemen to the promise land.

UMass' core problem was described several times in this video: the New England area simply doesn't pump out high level football players.

The ones that do meet the critera are recruited by Boston College, Michigan and other Power 5 programs. UMass is relegated to competing with other regional schools for the leftovers and it doesn't have a nationwide recruiting presence to offset the dearth of talent.

'Coach'em up' has severe limits when the program is not invested in by the institution and the fanbase/student body has been widely turned off due to the dysfunction and poor decision-making of the administration.

Of course you'll have some gems pass through like Marcel Shipp, Victor Cruz, Andy Isabella and Liam Coen, but every snall program has that.

The best move for UMass is to develop a strategy which includes dropping back down and rebuilding the entire program with a Power 5 mindset in terms of facilities, premium options for fans and offerings that the players would not get in other lower level programs.

While competing against a lower level of competition, UMass could still compete for those unheralded recruits that can't hang at the higher level, but can be productive there. The program could maybe even get washouts from the Power 5 conferences and JUCOs looking to rebuild their status.

Or they could just shelve the program altogether like Boston University did.

It's honestly a reality that both Uconn and UMass need to go back to FCS to rebuild their programs there. But, UConn and UMass won't do that because there are more concerned about how much money they're going to get from getting absolutely crushed by better teams then actually nurturing their own programs. The athletic administrators and the fan base is too apathetic to see the reality of the situation. And I'm really shaking my head that the MAC really accepted these guys instead of Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. If the MAC was really going to bring in UMass they would have at least told them to bring UConn as well. I don't know if there's any way you can fix the program.

UMass. You have it wrong about the move to the MAC. Most sports fans favor the move! Only primary basketball fans are not happy. The only positive is moving to the MAC as the only positive is very wrong as well! UMass has been recruiting on pair with G5 teams and very well in the transfer portal. UMass has a good Midnight Ride Collective and a good coaching staff, along with finally adequately funding football. Will be shedding paying multiple Power teams, which really hurt the players and can't thing of a G5 team that is successful averaging playing nearly 3 Power Conference games a season. We lost our #1 QB in the 2nd game against Auburn, after beating the 2nd best team in CUSA, plus Army on the road.

I am sure they wanted to move up to 1A after their success but it was probably financially impossible.

I am from MA. My cousin and his wife are alumni.

It really is a shame that our state cannot support a good football team. BC or Umass. They are just awful.

At least BC made it to.the #2 rank in the bation with Matt Ryan at QB.

I question whether or not this school should even play football anymore.

Meanwhile, the hockey team is pretty good.
