Moderation in All Things (Food, Alcohol, Prayer) | LITTLE BY LITTLE | Fr Columba Jordan CFR

It's sad to see a disconnect between our wants and our needs, yet it happens all the time. Are you conscious of potential gluttony at meals, or potential drunkenness at parties? Even with good things, like prayer — do you pray the amount you should, the amount God is asking you — not the amount you feel guilty enough to demand of yourself, especially if it's unrealistic? Fr Columba explains more.

I had to quit alcohol because I was not able to moderate it socially, I don’t miss it because it was becoming destructive I’ve become a better catholic but still lots more room for improvement. Thanks Fr

Please pray for me. My testimony is one of faith. No matter what we are facing God will give us strength to over come. Even though every month I struggle to pay rent and I struggle to buy groceries for my children. I keep faith. I’m ashamed and discouraged. These past three years have been hard on me. Since suffering a heart attack two years ago and my on going battle with lupus. As a single mom I’m overwhelmed. My sons are autistic and have problems with social communication and interactions but they are thriving now that I’m homeschooling them. Due to me homeschooling them my hours to work are limited like my finances. I’m constantly in fear of homelessness. But I STILL TRUST IN YOU LORD. Faith over fear!

Didn't hear anyone walking, squeaky or not. ❤ Great message for us Americans for Thanksgiving week.

I would agree with you on the love part. I would also add. If you can, don't pray in moderation. Offer up even menial tasks as prayer. Like St. Therese and her little way.

I easily associate moderation with “things of the flesh”, but not with prayer. I have struggled most of my life with the burden of feeling like I should pray more, even though I probably do pray enough (and with quality) most days. Thank you for the refreshing reminder that moderation includes prayer. Not a very common angle in the discussions on moderation, yet wise to point out. God bless you Fr. Columba.

I once had a work friend who would eat everything on his plate when we went out for lunch. No matter how much. And you know how big serving sizes are at US restaurants. His reasoning was that he payed for the food, so he should eat all of it.

I always think I should love more than I do... Especially to love God more... I want to love more I pray for that always 🙏

“I’m only going to eat what I need…” that one statement would save people alot of money not investing in diet plans… I struggle with this… using food as an emotional crutch- my one life pleasure- though I need to rid of sugar etc to get healthier…. Its so difficult… 🙏🙏🙏

I think my 2yr puppy could learn from this too… he cant seem to understand that nonstop eating of bones and treats will only make him sick. Hmmmm… maybe our pets even model our behaviors… as my dog is currently begging as I type wanting more treats… 😂😂😂

Glutony its about time we heard a talk on glutony so thanks Father.
I think every time we eat we are guilty of it .let The mercy of God remind us.
All in moderation Amen

Being more mindful of what I need helps me resist over spending overeating. Slowing down a bit keeps me in a meow balanced state. Prayer slows me down enough that I can resist the excess in things that I don’t need. Awareness happens as I am praying.

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:17. Then think about the Jesus prayer and how you can constantly recite it. If you want to read further, check out Way of a Pilgrim

I used to make the same joke! It's very liberating when you work out the needs/wants ratio.

Gluttony isn't just about food.. though food is the easiest to explain it. Gluttony is anything we become overly obsessive about, that takes over our lives. It becomes our reason to live... They often aren't bad things... like food is not bad. You need it to live... but if 70% or more of your life is taken up by it... There is usually a problem.

It is only NOT a problem, is if God himself tells you to do it. Like the Prophet to laid in bed on one side for a year and then the other side for a year.. or something like that. There was no moderation in that, but doing God's will.

Love (which is God) and God's will needs no moderation.... most everything else does. :)

I think a lot of people don't talk about Gluttony because they think is just not eating or drinking too much... They don't understand that even Workaholics that spend more time working then at home with family.. is also... making the "work" into their obsession, and Gluttony is the thing that aids obsessions.

I love that in the Catholic Church, we have seasons of feasting and fasting (e.g., Lent and Easter, Advent and Christmas). It's like the Church is demonstrating to us that both are okay (in moderation, of course, because feasting or fasting all the time is not healthy).

presumambly moderation in food also applies to eating good things as opposed to sugary fatty treats. Up with vegetables down with chocolates. Not just quantity.

Gluttony is culturally acceptable so easy to be blind to it plus can be linked to various medical conditions
