I am not a biologist, but what I have found in putting minerals out in the north and now the south is as follows:
- For a flat out attractant Buck Jam Persimmon kicks butt! Pour it over a stump and the stump will be gone. I also use it to pour over my mineral sites and they turn them into bomb craters! No BS on that. And that was true in the north as well.. And those deer have 0 clue what a persimmon is.
- Minerals (commercial made): Hands down it is Whitetail Institute 30-06 mineral (loose and block). The deer get on this and will not leave. I have already put some out and they are hitting it. I use blocks in some locations just as a change up and it's a bit easier in certain spots. I will at times 1/4 them up so they can leach into the soil.
- Honorable mention is Record Rack Wildberry... But I think they stopped making the loose form (damn it).. I did buy out TSC when they had it on clearance.
- Homemade mineral mix... VERY easy. 1 50lb bag of cattle mineral, 1 50lb bag of white stock salt, 2 50lb bags of trace mineral salt. Use it in a 1:1:2 ratio. I do find that the use of the Buck Jam on this is very, very helpful with this, but not a must.. The cattle mineral may not appeal to the deer (taste??).. Just mix the mineral mix into the dirt and pour Buck Jam over it.
- If you don't want to pay $10 for a jug of Buck Jam, NB Wildman has a "DIY Wildberry Buck Jam" recipe on his channel that works VERY well. I tweaked it (I use boiled down Hawaiian Punch instead of water LOL) a bit, but his original recipe works DAMN good!

I think your video shows that while still in winter mode, the deer are more attracted to "food smells/tastes" as opposed to straight mineral type mixes. My cameras have shown that to me in my areas. The deer will start really hammering the minerals when their body tells them too. I get mine out as soon as the season is over so the pregnant does and their fawns get a head start so to speak. It takes a few years of sticking with it to see results. I do notice the fawns look to be growing faster and healthier. The late season pictures and the ones I have gotten thus far show very healthy deer.
Sorry that was so long, but I really enjoy putting minerals out.

Fun experiment! I have always used trace minerals marketed for cattle (besides, without a buck picture on the mineral, it’s surprising how affordable they are) 😁👍

For the best bang for your dollar is a trace block from a feed store. Your getting a 50 lb block for the price of some of the other deer centered blocks. You can add other minerals to it if you desire to it

I've used the liquid deer cane many many times and have never once been disappointed in its results! I left the spot one time for 6 weeks and the whole that the deer dogged to the ground trying to get to that stuff was astounding! Out of those different 7 I wouldn't even think twice about what i would get. Pretty cool video!

Trophy Rocks, Molasses and Deer Cane have always worked very well for me year round.

A tip or two.
If you have any rotten stumps in your area, kick them in and pour your "powdered minerals" into the hole which you made. Deer are naturally attracted to these areas as they provide access to the minerals found in an old stump hole.

Deer attractant's: place anywhere there is deer activity and likely to be up and away from the elements.
Typically attractant's are a food source which will be eaten quickly and overlooked afterwards where as a mineral source may last for months.

Liquid minerals work well over the top of tree stumps, shallow holes and logs. Basically your looking to place your liquid minerals onto or into an area where they will be absorbed and the deer will need to work to retrieve it.

For what it's worth, I would just go to your local cattle feed/supply store and purchase some mineral and salt blocks or loose bags of minerals . These itemss will last much longer than the products sold at Walmart and in the end cost you less that the constant replacement cost of the retail products.

Trophy rock and deer cane in the same spot works well for us. Trophy rock lasts a long time and once they find it they hit it daily. The deer cane will have them digging in that spot for months after it’s gone from sight, both combined is a great option.

Thanks to you (and your Dad) for helping the rest of us save some money by testing all these for us.

Here is a quick FYI iam in PA, it's different in different areas what works great for me, deer at my buddies place 5 miles away only, do not even touch it and visversa, been trying different things for years because I just enjoy seeing the results and chking my trail cams . Most of the products are packaged to catch the eye of the customer . Enjoy your time outdoors, be safe, happy hunting.

Trophy rock I have alot of experience with. They hit it better during the velvet stage and into early seaso the best. The key with Trophy Rock IMHO is to put it on a stump and let it season the stump. It will last a good 6 months or more. Great product.

Great test! Thanks for taking the time putting it together. I have used most of those products with much the same results you got. The trophy rock is great but you have to get it up off the ground so it doesn't dissolve too quickly. Give lucky buck a try. In my experience with it the deer will dig the ground for a year trying to get it.

I am in Central Arkansas and have 2 food plots and Tripod hanging feeders. I had a couple of bags of the Crushed Sugar Beets given to me so I put one bag at each feeder location. I will say the deer took to the sugar beets very quick. In 3 days I went to the feeders and the Crushed Sugar Beets were gone. Not a trace left. I will say I was very impressed with the Sugar Beets.

Persimmon Flavor... Whitetails go nuts for it... Or a good old apple tree.

Great video with helpful information. Here in Maine I had a trophy rock and trophy rock in a bag all crushed up. I put that out at a stump. I drilled some holes into the stump and made sure some of the minerals were in the holes. That was in May. The deer constantly go to that stump and as of now October they still visit that stump regularly. I think my area has a mineral shortage because I have never had deer constantly visit a mineral site as much as they have here. Looks like I may have to get some of that liquid mineral to give that a try as well.

Black manic works good even on hard ground. You’re supposed to pour water on it to dissolve it or put it out before a rain so that it soaks into the ground. That’s probably why it picked up once the snow melted.

I've used on my property black magic, crush liquid, Deer Cain, Crush block, etc.
Black magic powder, smells super sweet, and is very strong. I'm partial to the Black Magic if the winds right I can smell it down one of my logging roads all the way to the house through the woods!
Bottom line right condition they all work like a bastard!

I’ve tried a few as well, some the deer didn’t hardly notice and some they totally avoided. For me the one they keep coming back to in my area is Big&J Headrush. Next best to that they just prefer a plain old salt block.
