This is the largest free kitchen in the world. Open 24 hours, year round, this food hall feeds 100,000 people for free each day. And on religious holidays that number can double.

Just one of these huge bowls is enough to feed around 10,000 people.

We visited Amritsar in India to find out everything that goes into feeding such a large crowd, and to see just what it takes to make such Big Batches.

I lived in an area with a large Sikh community. Every year they would hold a huge religious festival and feed the surrounding community. Everything was free. They would even provide free transportation to the area where the festival was being held. I never saw anything like it. They seem like really good people. Very selfless.

Sikh community seems really nice, here in Italy I've met few of them, they were nice, hard workers, and respectful.

Something else to note: This is in the state of Punjab which is a Sikh majority state and while the Golden Temple feeds such a large number of people, it is isn’t the only one. You could walk into ANY gurdwara and you can expect food and shelter regardless of your race, creed, caste, gender or any other socioeconomic characteristics. Even in Western nations, if you ever find yourself hungry with no means to eat, just find the nearest Gurdwara and you’ll be fed.

I used to work with two sikhs. Forgot my lunch one day and they basically lightly fought each other to see who was going to buy me lunch. Such nice people!

Everytime Sikh people are on my local news it's because they are doing a food drive or helping to rebuild something or volunteering for this or that. Never hear anything bad about Sikhs and I really respect them for that. I've only personally known 2 different Sikh families and both of them were all great people.

In my entire life of going Gurdwara I have never heard the kitchen being empty or having run out of food unlike many restaurants do. It's honestly remarkable. Seva is powerful.

I ate at this langar once. The food was amazing. Can't believe how it was so delicious despite being made in such a large batch. The dedication of the volunteers and employees is unparalleled.

As a Sikh, Ive been raised to think of this as a duty or service to the community. Ive never seen any Sikh or Gurdwara take 'credit' for this. This humbleness is what we need more of in today's world. Proud to be a Sikh.

I've had the absolute pleasure, of volunteering at the golden temple.
The sheer volume of preparation that is involved, to feed thousands upon thousands of people, is truly remarkable.
All that is asked of you, is to cover your head and remove your shoes, for a constant flow of food.

This is what a functioning community looks like. No division amongst the people. Just unity.

I've been there 2004 and it's exactly like this. The eating hall was spotless and the food tastes fantastic. I wouldn't have known how amazing the Sikh community was. I'm so grateful to have been to the Golden temple.

I have a Sikh friend, he is also following this mindset. He wants to help all the time, no matter what the problem is.

The dishes are washed, in 5 different stages. So one stage cleans the plate, then the second stage washes it again and so on. So the dishes are very clean. Just thought I'd add this, so people understand the emphasis of cleanliness in Langar.
