What is Mobile Device Management (MDM)?

Mobile device management software is an application that helps secure, monitor, and manage mobile devices. This is typically referred to for helping manage cell phones and tablets, but you could technically use it with computers or IoT devices, and in fact is great if personal devices are mixed together in your work environment.

It depends on the MDM software, but it can potentially help manage both corporate-owned devices and personal devices, without invading privacy or getting access of any kind to those personal devices.

Once set up, this software usually detects the user and gives them appropriate secure access to their usual applications and files, just as if they had logged on with their work computer. It also can detect when a new device is trying to access that same info and reacts accordingly to whatever IT policies have been put in place.

If you or anyone in your company utilizes cell phones, tablets, or uses personal devices to access work information, a good mobile device management application can really streamline everything between all of the devices while also potentially adding extra layers of security across the board.
