Great to hear/ see you react to this song. It often gets overlooked. It plays on the album directly before, and transitions into Oh Father. (I know you’ve reacted to that song already) . This song deliberately juxtaposes its sweet perfect childhood, to the dark/ painful childhood of Oh Father. When you listen to both tracks one after the other, the emotive contrast is incredibly moving. Loving this M journey..😁😉👍🏼

The singles from this album truly show what a diverse album it was.
Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish, Oh Father, Dear Jessie, Keep It Together...they really cover so many genres, themes and musical styles.

This was released as a single in the UK (reached #5 in the UK single charts). It was the first single I ever bought (I was 8 at the time).

Such a cute song. It was a track I used to skip as a teen but have come to treasure in later years.
Great reaction as always and look forward to the tour reaction ❤❤

Madonna wrote this song for Patrick Leonards daughter, Jessie. Patrick was writing and producing with Madonna alot of her 80s albums and they were friends.
This song was a hit in Europe but never released as a single in the US.

I also point out the songs promise to try and Till Death Do Us Part which are also part of like a prayer. The first is dedicated to his mother, the second to the end of her marriage to Sean Peen

Madonna never ceases to amaze. Just when you think her LAP album is all about serious themes and issues she cares about, she’d pop-in songs with a thread that harkens to her early happy childhood up to about when her mom passed away prematurely, and her seeming to be reaching in to her lost childhood innocence, playful, imaginative, and whimsical. From the playful young girl on Oh Father who couldn’t quite fully comprehend then the trauma that’d come from her mom’s death, to her running away gleefully with her young friend at the end of Open Your Heart, to her asking a young girl to “make a wish” on that Pepsi commercial, to her playing with a young and adult mermen on the beach on Cherish, and to this Dear Jessie of a young girl in a fantasy world of Disney-like characters.
She was 30/31 when she worked on and released LAP album and music videos, and her happy interaction with Pat Leonard’s young daughter, Jessie, at the recording studio which inspired this song/video, could also stem perhaps from her own desire then for motherhood. The gift of motherhood would profoundly change her focus and priorities in life and career with the birth of her daughter, Lourdes, in 1996; son Rocco in 2000 and her adoption of 4 orphans. This period inspired her to write and publish a series of 6/7 children’s books from 2003 thru 2005 that hit The NY Times bestseller list, were translated into other languages and sold over 3mil copies worldwide. She donated all the profits from the sale of her children’s books to her Ray of Light Foundation and other charities that focused on children’s educational and welfare in impoverished countries. From all appearances, she had lovingly raised her 6 kids into their teens and adulthood as a family, and she credits them for her pulling through from her recent brush with a serious illness that delayed her Celebration tour. Am enjoying your reactions and Madonna journey—thank you!❤

highly recommend listening to “till death do us part” from the like a prayer album - it’s one of madonna’s greatest album cuts

Dear Jessie was always played in parents car when I was 10 in 1989. I know the lyrics word for word. Ladies thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Such a super sweet song. I am on the same page as you, Brenda, I felt the vibes of the Beatles throughout this as well. In the strings and horns, along with this animation. Very much reminds me of the yellow submarine era.
Many others have suggested that this is perhaps a sequel, or a flip on Oh Father. Perhaps it is… I don’t know.
Looking forward to seeing your review of the Blond Ambition tour!! ♥️
Ty for this review. Well done ladies. Have a lovely day. 😊

If I’m not mistaken, the reasons for her not being in this video were: 1- it was a single only in Germany and the UK; 2- she was working in Dick Tracy. Not sure if already filming it, but definitely in pre-production. There’s a making of this video, it was a featurette in the uk because it was made by Animation City, an English animation company 😊

I remember this being in U.K. charts and it was released at Xmas time and was in top 10 for a long time - I think it was rush released as a single hence why the video isn’t very expensive looking but it’s still cute and goes with the song very well ❤

Around the time Madonna was recording Like a Prayer, Patrick Leonard, who co-wrote the album, used to take his daughter Jessie into the studio. Madonna quickly befriended Jessie .Later, she commented, "It was like I was my mother and she was me when I was little. We were playing again in our backyard Noticing the bond that was established between the singer and her daughter Jessie, Leonard presented this sort of lullaby to Madonna that she liked so much even though she changed the lyrics
