It was not a failure for those that started the SPACs since they made $$$ regardless how it did after it went public

As someone who audits for a big 4 firm; yes SPACs are a grift 9/10 times

Well, yes, they're a stupid idea. It's not even market speculation, but a pure gamble. If you're putting money into stock or and investment trust of some kind you either (a) can investigate where your money's going or (b) can rely on an established track record.

A SPAC is purely speculative. An investment requires some kind of awareness of where your money is going, but a SPAC is gamble, because it's not even tied to an existing entity that's developed trust over time.

Didn't Chamath do a bunch of these?

rather simplistic analysis, no? by the metric of how many companies are down 40% to date since 2020, a lot of "normally" listed companies are "failures" as well

If the market economy was allowed to work without meddling the SPAC wave would have been an overwhelming success. Too many people have gotten complacent about investments, believing that the existence of the SEC and other agencies convey safety and reduced risk onto entities not necessarily deserving of that view. If there was no protection (beyond protections against fraud) then investors would be more hesitant, and hopefully, by extension, more diligent about their examination of an opportunity. Investment decisions should be made after an investor has balanced their own personal greed and fear motivations.
