Why do many programs insist on a reboot after you install them?

I just click "no il reboot later" and launch the program anyway. Never had an issue

I never bother unless the program doesn't work right. Which has only happened literally once or twice.

You hardly ever need to reboot after installing software's on Linux. Reboot is usually only required for drivers and kernel install/update.

Well, 95% of the times, you don't actually need to reboot to use the program. Mainly because 95% of the times, the programs don't actually need any system integration but for some reason they still bother the user with instalation.

Honestly, not *that* many programs require a reboot. It's usually drivers and the like. Installing a new browser, or unzip program that gets integrated in context menus and explorer don't even require reboots.

Very informative. Glad, I watched this video. I figured the registry portion was a reason for a reboot. The adding/removing of programs though. That never made sense, till now.

This is very much a Windows annoyance.

Can you please consider doing a episode on CDMA vs GSM phones, and why so few phones actually include CDMA (and thus leave out us (American) verizon and sprint customers)? Also, can you look into how carrier subsidized pricing works (and the business logic behind it), the way unlocked phones work, and why phones are skyrocketing in price?

I still try to get most of my applications as Portable, no install required.
That way I can just format and not have to worry about reinstalling dozens of softwares.

When installing multiple programs that are each somewhat related (audio interface drivers and DAW software that tightly integrates hardware control, for example), is it safe to install them all in one go and restart once at the end, or should I reboot between each installed program?

I don't know what you are talking about.

Installing things like new Linux kernel (upgrading) does not enable the kernel right after the installation.
Most of the programs I know don't need to reboot after installation. VirtualBox sometime may do problem, I don't remember having problem after installing that and starting.
Installing system stuffs like upgrading GRUB or plymouth themes etc. of course need restart, otherwise how would you test it!

EDIT: Oh! forget to mention that if a program is not responding (like the GNOME keyring) just kill it with SIGKILL and restart it! No worries...

My Linux is changing wheels while driving on highway 100% rebootless. How cool Linux is...

Now that I think of it, I haven't had to reboot after an install since the days of SafeDisc, SecuROM, Starforce, etc and always assumed reboot was due to a driver install.

Met a guy this past summer who was working on updating Linux dynamic link libraries while they are being used. It was pretty straight forward but very interesting research.
