SQL is what makes it possible to access the data stored in digital file cabinets -- or databases. Structured Query Language is a programming language that also has a job to do; watch to learn what it does.

Company data used to be stored in file cabinets in offices -- and while that still works for some small businesses, large enterprises have far, far too much data. So, digital databases are used not only for data storage but also data analytics. The problem? It’s near impossible for a human to sift through a database like they might a file cabinet.

SQL, or Structured Query Language, is a common denominator between humans and databases -- it’s easy for a human to write, understand and use, and databases understand commands written in SQL.
