"Halo", the new chef d'oeuvre from Finland's melancholic progressive metallers AMORPHIS will be released via Atomic Fire on February 11th. In advance of the record's official unveiling, today the band finally reveals a new single accompanied by a music video filmed in the Finnish snow and directed by Pekka Hara. 'On The Dark Waters' is further proof of the band's undeniable talent in fusing heavy riffs with an epic and melodic chorus, and is not only part of the new album but also available as an exclusive 7'' vinyl.

Lyricist Pekka Kainulainen comments the theme of the track:
"I got the idea to reverse the direction of the Tuonela stream - Tuonela is the realm of the dead in Finnish mythology. So I started writing from the moment of death... And death was not the end, but the beginning."

On The Dark Waters

On the dark waters of Tuonela
Sailed a ship hewn out of bone
Clambering against the current
Swiftly sailing the black waters
No water gushed around its fore
No trail left behind its aft
No oars there were to be seen
No sail hoisted on its mast

Who did sail that boat of bone
Steer the silent ship of death?
As it flew and dove
And made its way upstream?
Waiting at the dark headwaters
Were a people sullen, silent
Baying for that ship to take
Their dead downstream

A ship of bone rose from the river
Called the dead aboard its deck
Through the fiery gates of life
It took its silent passengers
The black waters of that river
Turned to blood, bubbled and boiled
As the boat of bone was blazing
Dead, dry veins ran red with life

Who did sail that boat of bone
Steer the silent ship of death?
As it flew and dove
And made its way upstream?
Waiting at the dark headwaters
Were a people sullen, silent
Baying for that ship to take
Their dead downstream

Into a dark bend of the river
Were cast the nameless unborn
On top of a barren outcrop
Naked bodies of the elders
The dead were squinting their eyes
As they once more saw their shadow
They were born to a life of tears
In the light of a forgotten sun

Swiftly on the sable waters
Sailed back the boat of bone
To the dark waters of Tuonela
And the people woke astounded
To the dawn of their new life
(Tuonela’s dark water)
Saw the day once more a-breaking
(Tuonela’s dark water)
Knew the night would be descending

My Swedish mother used to say that the Finns are some weirdos living in the forest and nobody knows what they were doing before inventing Nokia. History proved that they were preparing the advent of the best band ever!! I never got tired of Amorphis, soundtrack of my life.

I love this versión of Amorphis, with a balance between growls and cleans. Tomi Joutsen, one of the greatest metal vocalists ever.

Surprised there's not a random Black Metal band shooting another video back there at the same time. But other than that, ALL HAIL AMORPHIS!

Hieno biisi taas. Oon 61 vuotta ja aloin noin 5 vuotta sitten kuunnella tätä genreä ja poikani suositteli Amorphista. Olen pitänyt paljon. Tätä uutta albumia olen odottanut jo jonkun aikaa ja hyvältä kuulostaa!

I love this. Amorphis shines the most when they balance clean and growled vocals - Tomi is one of my favorite vocalists out there, he's just SO STRONG and the rest of the band backs him up so well!

When I discovered Amorphis I had no idea how much they would change my life and how much I would love them, I'm not a fan of harsh vocals and growls, but when I listen to Jutsen his voice comes like a melody, the folk elements, the riffs of Holopainen and the solos from keyboards and guitar are enchanting, they take me on a journey, I become one with their music.
Oh how much i love this band!!!

This album is proving to be, like, the right mix of elements of Under the Red Cloud and Queen of Time. I think they're striking the balance well. Yeah. Yeah, this is good stuff.

It has Tuonela vibes with the greatness of modern sound. The Elegy solo with sitar is magnificent... And lot of winter... Well done our Musical Heroes.

I love the part at 3:48 when he starts singing the phrase, then pauses a few words in. And you're thinking he'll finish the phrase in a few beats but then he holds the pause a bit longer. Then he finally comes back in at the last second to complete the phrase. It sounds soooo good! ❤

How can a song feel both nostalgic and completely new at the same time?

The part from 3:42 on always gets tears in my eyes. The richness, the intensity, the speed. It's so stress relieving, feels so decondensing, soothing and calming, while charging you up with strength at the same time. I discovered the band while hanging out a the Viking bar in Berlin, drinking met. This will be one of my best years.
