Northrop Grumman developed the X-47B as part of the US Navy's Demonstration Carrier Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS) program. The X-47 project began as part of DARPA's J-UCAS program and is now a part of the Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration (UCAS-D) program of the United States Navy. The X-47B made its maiden flight in 2011, and in 2013 it conducted flight tests following a series of successful ground and operator-based demonstrations.
The X-47B UCAS is intended to assist the Navy in investigating the future of unmanned carrier aviation. A successful flight test program is paving the way for the creation of a more permanent fleet of unmanned aircraft based on aircraft carriers. These unmanned aerial vehicles will execute high-risk offensive operations against enemy air defenses, enemy surface ships, and even enemy fighter planes.
