When you murder someone, that's not you. It's a reflection of your work

Your actions are so deeply connected with who you are, they are the truest version of yourself, not even a reflection. People on social media, that would be a reflection. Not their action.

Not sure who told you this, but stop paying him

"Just a reflection of your work" Time to get a new therapist.

I think this depends on whether the action or outcome is mainly based on my choices or not. Like losing or winning in chess or league isn't a reflection of who I am because it's outcome is based 50% (or 90% in league's case) on someone else. If I am wanting to improve, that can happen independent of results. But if the outcome is largely dependent on me, then it does reflect on me. If I don't do my job assignment or homework or at least a poor job of it, that is largely a reflection of myself and my choices. Obviously even in those scenarios outside factors can play a role (and people with worse mental, economic, etc. circumstances will have less control over outcomes/actions)

I noticed I started playing less when I started expecting and/or caring to win more

Chess does not define you, even though you can be extremely tilted by it.

I see, there is no way of playing chess without some form of therapy.

That's a way to get wrong about one's identity. We perceive ourselves through our thinking, and others perceive us through our deeds. Separating the ego from these two (as in this case chess is about what reflexion you do, and what you decide to do) is very dangerous. You will end up realising that in fact what defines us, our "true" self is nothing more than concrete events linked by memory.

It is certainly a good idea to separate yourself your self-image from what you do. But it is also very important to correct those behaviors emotional responses, etc.

When you're playing poker, you're just playing poker... 💯🙏🏼

People who are jumping all over this and equating with murder, etc., She's talking about a game here. A game where she is always trying her best. She's not talking about life and death actions. Try defaulting to kindness/understanding online instead of trying to rip others apart/insult them.
Athletes have to be able to separate results from action. I play a lot of pool also and if I'm allowing my conscious mind to judge shots as "bad" or "good" or I'm focused on win/loss I instead of the shot I'm on, I will never perform at my best. My conscious judging mind will interfere with my subconscious mind which is deeply linked with the physical skills I have trained thousands of hours. The mental game of billiards and chess are incredibly similar even though chess lacks the physical skills side of the game.

Good advice. When I lose games or lose lane in league I feel like a failure

What am I if not the things I express and do? To separate myself from myself is impossible.

People on here aren’t understanding. Ofc actions speak louder than words, but your quality of game play or work didn’t mean you’re a good, bad or lazy person. You just may not have found the right job or you enjoy playing and problem solving more than you study.
