This is Why Japan’s Geography Sucks. Take a look at this topographic map of the country. Over 73% of its land is dominated by mountains spread across more than sixty thousand islands. which means that most of Japan's land is incredibly difficult and expensive to develop for human habitation. As a result, more than 60% of Japanese reside in these flat plains.

Moreover, Only 12% of Japan's land is suitable for farming. Therefore Japan has always had to look abroad for the supplies to feed its population.

Also, Japan is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to natural disasters. As it's geographic location is at the intersection of four different tectonic plates that often cause huge earthquakes and devastating tsunami like in 2011 and 1995.

So, It's safe to say that Japan still struggles with her geographic limitations.

Japan may not be perfect geography, but most countries have the same issue. Most of the US population lives on the east coast, east of the Rockies. It also provides a geographiclly stabilizing position to counter China. China has one sea lane out between Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, so it’s invaluable to the US.
