On the Journey, Episode 148: What is Divine Revelation? Dei Verbum, Part I

Many are familiar with the fact that the Catholic Church does not hold to the Reformation doctrine of "sola Scriptura."

But what *does* the Catholic Church teach about God's Word?

Matt Swaim, Ken Hensley and Kenny Burchard begin a new series unpacking "Dei Verbum," the Catholic Church's official document on Divine Revelation from the Second Vatican Council. They begin by looking at the historical climate leading up to the council in the early 1960's, and how that provided a new opportunity for the Church to re-articulate its understanding of how God speaks to His people.

As former Evangelical pastors, Ken and Kenny share how reflecting on this period in Catholic history has helped them to better appreciate what the Church has to say about the Bible and the nature of divine revelation.

I’m so excited for this new series. I came to the Christian faith by reading the new testament but did not have much guidance. Almost thirty years later after seeing the holes in the doctrine of Sola scriptura I became Catholic. This has been the best decision and I have found a thriving parish that offers Bible study several times a week. I especially like the Great Adventure Bible series that ties the Old Testament to the New Testament.

At the end of RCIA, I was given a New American Bible Catholic Version as a gift from our Church and felt as Kenny did…so happy to be encouraged to read the Bible.

Vatican II is under such an attack right now from the sede-vacantists, that this topic, this beautiful document "Dei Verbum", "Word of God" Who is from the Beginning, is just the right subject for me today!

Thank you for this!
Ever since my dad's (a convert in the late 40's, early 50's) problems with how Second Vatican Council was implemented here in the U.S., and yet retaining his faith in the Church, I've struggled with this issue - so glad to hear a logical, enlightening discussion of all the issues surrounding this. I will be listening to the next video that is out now, and look forward to your future videos on this topic. I will be interested to see if you cover the incident that caused the difference in how Vatican II was implemented here in the U.S. so drastically from other Catholic countries.

You three are my favorites to listen to in learning more about my lifelong Catholic faith.

The rosary provides a banquet of scripture, combining an ancient traditional prayer with the gospel.

Don't know if you prefer I comment on YouTube or the website, I'll repeat myself here: This is great. I read Dei Verbum a couple of years ago. I will dig out my notes and follow along. This is a wonderful idea for a series.

Those who promote TLM only and anti Vatican II should give this a listen!

Theology should be conducted in the vernacular, despite how linguistic complexities have always made that difficult. However, it needs to be done with a heart open to how God may reveal himself differently to people who speak different languages. Had that been understood in the 5th century, the earliest extant fissures within the Church may never have formed.
