‘Mary Poppins’ Age Rating Increased in the U K Due to ‘Discriminatory Language’ #shorts
the British Board of Film Classification has upped Disney’s Mary Poppins cinema rating from U, meaning it contained no material likely to offend or harm, to PG for discriminatory language.
A BBFC spokesperson noted the film's two instances of the discriminatory term 'hottentots. Despite Mary Poppins historical context, the use of such language exceeds our U rating guidelines. Consequently, we classified the film as PG due to discriminatory language.
The word is a racially insensitive term for the Khoekhoe, an indigenous group in South Africa. The BBFC further explained that the word is used in the film by Admiral Boom, including when referring to the chimney sweeps whose faces are covered in soot.
The BBFC also went on to say, our research on racism and discrimination reveals a primary concern among parents: the risk of children being exposed to offensive language or behaviour. Consequently, certain language or behaviours are strictly prohibited in U or PG ratings, regardless of context.
