Millions of Indians have exercised their democratic right, with approximately 969 million people registered to vote in the world’s largest elections. This includes 18 million first-time voters and 197 million individuals in their 20s, making India’s electorate larger than the combined population of the 27 European Union member states.

In the first phase, which covered 102 constituencies across 21 states and territories, voter turnout ranged from 40 percent in Bihar to 68 percent in Tripura. The Election Commission reported that the multiphase 2019 polls had an average turnout of 67 percent.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking a third term, urged all eligible voters to participate in record numbers. Meanwhile, the main opposition Indian National Congress party appealed to voters to end “hatred and injustice.”
