''Far away from the madding crowd'', -
Thomas Hardy would not object I'm sure.....
Robert Farnon was a brilliant arranger, conductor and composer of so called 'light classics'. He was also a musical poet! How beautiful is this mellow orchestral tone poem of 'The Lake in the Woods'.... It probably was the deep woodlands of Robert Farnon's native Canada and the vast lakes within their depths that inspired this music.
In this video the English countryside in all its moods is woven around the rich harmonies and attempts to mirror the mood of the music as light reflects off the rippling waters.
The Lake and the Woods is recorded by:-
Robert Farnon and his orchestra.

As a fellow Canadian who now lives there by a lake and spent many years in the English landscape, yup it all definitely works...

Une oeuvre de toute beauté pastorale qui fait parfois penser à Debussy. Robert Farnon malheureusement mal connu en France est à mes yeux un très grand compositeur et chef d'orchestre. Merci à Jayne Anne Strutt de ce très bon choix.

A great piece of music by one of Canada's foremost light music composers. Hope somebody will post "A Summer Love", "Pictures in the Fire", "How Beautiful Is Night", "Lazy Day" and "In a Calm". His music is truly innovative and beautiful. Bravo!!!

I always remember this piece playing on the Series 4 Men Behaving Badly episode "Infidelity" when Deborah and Tony are watching a film and this is playing in the background!

I recently watched Backfire (1950) on TCM which is a film Noir classic. In a few spots there was a cue of music that sounded so familiar and after much thought realized it sounded like a section from this Robert Farnon classic. I wonder if that film composer Daniele Amfitheatrof used some of Farnon's piece for his composition or the other way around. The similiarity is striking and was used in moody flashback situation in the movie and not as something pastoral or bucolic.

Amongst the many contributions to Delius's music and life

Such as the BBC Special (Sea Drift BBC Proms)

Also Ken Russell's Song of Summer

And Tasmin Little's, Lost Child.

I suggest to add another branch of artistic ambition

Delius -> Fenby > -> Strutt

Enjoyed! Did you hear the Singers Unlimited sing Satie's Gymnopedie arranged by Farnon?
