Governments all over the world are looking to smartphone technology to stay ahead of the coronavirus outbreak.
Many are using or developing apps that track our movements, and let us know if we've been close to an infected person.
Tracking and tracing software will become even more important as countries start to ease lockdowns.
However, critics are worried about potential breaches to our privacy and security.
So how should we manage these concerns?

Presenter: Bernard Smith

Guests:

Michael Veale - Co-Developer of the privacy-preserving COVID-19 tracking system DP-3T and Fellow at the University College of London.

Nolen Gertz - Assistant Professor at the University of Twente and Technology Ethicist.

My wife tries to track my movements all the time. I swear if she could implant or insert a GPS tracking device into me one night I decide to sleep home with her I swear she would!

Contact tracing app can be voluntary but restaurant, shop, public transport, etc have the right to refuse entry for people who don't use it.

One of the better discussions I've found on this matter. But still missing the unpacking of just what 'privacy concerns' are. Surely if everyone is so terrified of their governments going all 1984 on them, then perhaps we ought to get rid of the governments? Seems anything can be used to oppress a population should a government desire, why should this ap be any different to the tracking already enabled by one's mobile phone?

Why be concerned about your privacy, when it is being invaded every time you use Zoom anyway.
