Hey, that's my card! Sold it to Spiderweeb, he didn't tell me anything about what he planned on doing with it and randomly sent me screenshot of GPU-Z with 16GB VRAM visible a few weeks later... I didn't even notice it at first!

BGA microsoldering is no joke. I took a weeklong course with one of the best shops in the country, and found out that my hands aren't steady enough. That was a big job. Respect.

Finally a GPU that has a reasonable amount of VRAM that NVIDIA decides to not give us

now a 3080 with 20GB soldered onto it would be EPIC because a 3080 is fast enough to get some nice use out of 20GB.

Dang, I really wish this existed. While I have had no issues in the VRAM department it would be nice to have the extra headroom for the future

I remember doing a similar mod for somebody back in the day. 22GB 2080ti mod was quite the sight to see. I've also done 12GB 1080tis because they used the same PCB as the Titan Xp but just didn't solder a chip down. Flashed Titan Vbios and it just became one after that. The 2080ti was an interesting one, because it was in for VRM repair, but I had the GDDR in stock for another GPU and offered to try it out for just the cost of the parts. Client said "hell yes do that" and now there's like 3 of them in existence that I've made.

In my experience, when VRAM runs out and stuff has to be loaded into system RAM instead, you might not necessarily notice a change in the average framerate, but you'll be more likely to encounter frequent stutters which can be very jarring.

FYI, many games will smartly adjust their LOD distances to dynamically reduce actual RAM needs to meet your card's capabilities.

What VRAM should look like on Nvidia cards:
50 series = 8Gb/12Gb
60 series = 12Gb/16Gb
70 series = 12Gb/16Gb
80 series = 16Gb/24Gb
90 series = 24Gb

At this point Dawid should just spell out “Thiddy” in the title

Bro i always knew this was a thing that could be done im happy its becoming more of a common practice even tho we shouldn’t have to

Finally a GPU that can utilize its full performance!
Edit: Even though some may argue that the performance difference is small. It will sure help in the future.

The performance uplift now may not be much, but as newer titles roll in like a year from now, the 16 gigs will seem necessary

Try testing the card in rendering tests/ workloads that take advantage of extra VRAM! It'd be interesting to see programs take actual advantage of the upgrade.

Awesome video! I'd like to see more from this card tested!

This is cool. I wanted to do something like that with my Nintendo Switch but I realise probably most games won't use more RAM anyway so might not be worth the cost.

Is the issue more pop in, and textures not loading correctly? That seemed to be the focus of the HWUB video at least. Would be interesting to see how textures performed. I imagine the reason the games are still running comparatively well on both cards, even when the 16 GB is pulling more textures, is because the textures aren't loading correctly on the 8 GB.

I wish board partner had the ability to add more vram
