The best generation. My dad loved Sinatra, big bands...too many to name. He served in WWII and received a purple heart. Married to my mom for 54 years before she passed. He was so cool, funny, witty...I miss him and love him so much.

I love Sinatra. His voice is like no other.

I need to share this story and hope someone else enjoys it as much I did.

On KJazz 88.1 on Saturday’s and Sunday’s from 10-12 there is a show called Sharell (the host) and Sinatra. The show revolves around Sinatra but plays other artists as well. I LOVE IT as a Sinatra fan I always tune in.

But Mr. Sharrell told a story leading up to this song and i wish I could listen to it again because he his phrasing was so beautiful. It kinda went like this…

“I had the privilege of seeing Frank Sinatra in concert around 20 or so times in my life. Each time just marvelous. I also had the privilege of meeting him about 7 times. Each time it was like him meeting for the first time because each time he did not remember me. But each time he was so kind and held a conversation. Saying thank you for being a fan. Each time it was like meeting him for the first time. Someone who doesn’t know or need you but you for sure need them. It was kind of like “All the Way”…”

Now, that's what I call great singing. Our Frank boy singing my favourite Sinatra number, All the way. I just heard Patti Page sing the number and she massacred it. Its a slow number to be sung with feeling and no one on this earth can beat Frank. Ditto his numbers: Moment to moment and Strangers in the night. Listen to the lyrics carefully, if a person doesn't love you completely, they are not worth having in your life. He or she must need you all the way in good and bad times. Mitzi Gaynor's character needed Frank's character through all the trials and tribulations in life; whereas, the stuck-up primma donna Jeanne Crain needed him only in good times and not when the chips were down. Do see, The Joker is wild, it's one of Frank's great movies. My top fave is without doubt is 'Pal Joey'. Frank is at his greatest; the numbers are all beauts; the girls Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak are gorgeous. What more do you need to have a perfect film. And, yes, the song My Funny Valentine is picturized on Kim Novak

For me, among the great popular singers of the mid century, I have to say Frank is #1. I also have to say that Nat King Cole is my # 2 which pains me to put him anywhere but first. It’s just that Frank had so many dimensions to him in his career with all the movies, the stage act and concerts and the Rat Pack. The whole package as they say. Nat and Frank consistently put me in that dream world with practically every song they recorded. Elvis is in there, for sure (Are you lonesome tonight is just ONE). But, Frank … it’s just this haunting mysterious almost intangible spell he casts with every note and phrase and physical delivery. You can’t be taught this level of gift. MAYBE coached but no Julliard crap here. Just a GOD given gift. Thank GOD…
