Thanks for showing us these places! I have been there once, almost 20 years ago (I am originally from Algiers). A fascinating place. Culturally, Mozabites are berbers and they speak a language of the Tamazight family (they also use Algerian Arabic now, especially with outsiders). They have a very interesting history. In the 8th century, a Persian Ibadi Imam founded the Rustamid dynasty that ruled over the central Maghreb for around 150 years (their capital was Tharet, present day Tiaret in North West Algeria). They were not desert people. The flew to the desert (Wargla) when the Fatimids took control of North Africa in the tenth century, before fleeing to the present location of Ghardaia in the early 11th century. Since these times, they follow a form of Islam that is neither Sunni nor Shia. They are Ibadi. Most Ibadi are today in Oman, but there are a few in Algeria (Ghardaia), Tunisia (Djerba), Libya (Djebel Nefusa, ) and Tanzania (Zanzibar). To be noted that until the mid-20th century, a minority of Mozabites were Jewish.

It's not the Algerian authorities who require you to take on a guide in Ghardaïa, but the Ghardaïa community itself.
Ghardaïa society is very well organised outside the state and the state respects its specificity. The inhabitants of Ghardaïa are extremely conservative and don't want to be disturbed by tourists, which is why they ask tourists to be accompanied by a guide in their town, which receives tourists out of pure tolerance on their part.

It’s a very beautiful ancient city. I think it’s very commendable of the government to safeguard tourists, to have a tour guide. This would also benefit the residents safety, since the streets are very quiet & narrow. I enjoyed this video very much. And believe that being respectful to other’s culture, beliefs, religion & laws are very important.

It's just 250km away from my country or even less from Ceuta, and it's so ghostlike to us. We care more about visiting places so far away. But in fact really close to home lies a mysterious, fascinating places, that even has lots of Spanish descendance from the Jews and Muslims who left the peninsula hundreds of years ago. We even share traditional songs together... I really look forward to the day I visit all of Algeria, and other places like Tunisia and Egypt. I love North Africa. 🙏 🇪🇦

Thanks for the video. I am originally from Algeria. The sticks you saw in the market are licorice that work for cleaning teeth.

Ghardaia, the whole city is a museum. And that includes the architecture, the way of life, and very old sophisticated ways to deliver water in a desert environment. That is why a guide is required. When one enters Ghardaia, he/she enters a museum. The locals want to keep it that way.

The city is conservative even for Algerian standards let alone westerners. But people are extremely nice and friendly.

Fun fact: The Mozabite people do not speak Arabic as their mother tongue. They have thier own language named Mozibi and it's a Berber (Amazigh) Language but I think the majority of them can speak Arabic as a second Language
