Locksmith here that has done this job a few times. Great tip on pulling the housing down to disengage the steering lock for the screws behind the wheel. Luckily the jobs I did I could still get the key to turn on. But now I know.

Thank you for this video. I bought a replacement but i didn't know i that i'm not supposed to turn it so i did and it locked out of sync with the key. I basically ended up with two unusable locks. That was until i found this video. Thank you so much.

I just did this today. the key wouldn't turn to turn the car on. I just had a flat head a phillips screwdriver, i was barley able to get the starry screws out without striping them using the phillips at a slight angle and I was able to get the"tamper proof" bolts out using a hammer on the flat head.
to get the key lock part off the cylinder was trickier, I had to bang the cylinder with a hammer while turning the key to get it in the on position so I could use a big safety pin to pop it out. I also had to swap out the other end, the part that plugs in, I push in two picture hanging nails in the grooves to push down the tabs and pop that out.
in 3 hours of work and youtube and $59 I got it all fixed, where as the repair shop quoted $600+

Really appreciate this video. Currently having trouble with a 2006 beetle. The steering wheel will not unlock. Overtime it’s become harder to unlock the antitheft lock but now it seems completely stuck. I’ve researched all I can about this and I’m considering changing out the entire cylinder. Will I be able to bypass the lock temporarily with the method you showed with the security screw removal? Or will it become engaged still and I should look to replace.
