The fact that almost all the sets were cg yet you don’t even notice it makes this even more impressive. Also the water effects are crazy good.

The best directors are the ones who understand all aspects of filmmaking from pre- to post-production. Takashi Yamazaki is the embodiment of that. He wrote the script, then directed it, and then brought it to life in the edit and through VFX. He is truly a gem amongst modern filmmakers and it is no wonder he produced such a masterpiece.

I'm a VFX artist and I'm blown away that the VFX team of 35 people were able to accomplish this quality of visuals in 8-months. Truly an amazing feat to accomplish. Well done team and congratulations on your Oscar win.

One VFX studio. 35 people. 610 shots. 8 months, only $15 million... and better than almost every big-budget Hollywood movie.

Godzilla bowing and thanking us for watching. For such a destructive fellow, he's very polite!

Honestly, the visual effects on this movie are a gift to the world. Hopefully Hollywood is taking note so it can produce effects-heavy movies with smaller budgets and take more creative risks.

I think the key here was the streamlined approval process. A lot of bigger budget movie's cost come from having to redo every shot in every step of the process.

As someone who has worked at a big vfx house, direct communication between director and artist saves SO MUCH TIME. I can't tell you how many times we went back and forth on something simply because producers or management were giving notes instead of actual creatives.

According to the director, the VFX team members were too involved in their own cuts, so there were some cuts that no one was in charge of. The director then used his own pocket money to buy a high-performance computer, and the director studied CG and happily said that he grew many trees on the mountain in the scene where the Shinden is flying and grass on the Shinden's airfield.

If you don’t win the Oscar it’s a crime. This is unreal how this was done and on the budget it had. I saw this 6 times in the theater, twice in 4DX, once Minus Color, and one of the 4DX was Minus Color. Each time I found more things to appreciate about this film. A true masterpiece. And now my favorite Godzilla film of all time slightly edging the 1954 classic. Arigato for this incredible film.

Yamazaki-San you are a genius.
Toho please bring him back for a Minus One sequel.

1:10 Watching the director wheel around the office on his chair made me laugh

This has to seriously be one of the most successful and impressive VFX stories in the past decade. For a limited budget, your team created a spectacle of a piece of artwork. Furthermore, it makes me happy as an aspiring VFX artist to see how people like you can create masterpieces with limited resources, and I appreciate you showing the process as well. Long live Godzilla!!!

Mixing traditional ways with cutting edge technology to create something new is something Japan had been doing forever and it's a Japanese tradition! Awesome!!
