hello!! i am very happy with how this video came out, and i hope you like it. :] you've probably seen clips of this countless times on my instagram/twitter, but the whole project is complete now and this will serve as the official first part of a little story im working on. (this was foreshadowed in the bloodpop video, shhhh..). hopefully more animations on the way, if not i am always active on instagram and twitter if you'd like to see more of my work

Watching her feeling that urge to cave in and grab the game-orange is a relatable feeling, at least for me.
It seems like a great metaphor for what happens in real life where you can use games or the internet to escape reality... only to reach back into depression or bad memories after escaping it and ignoring it for so long.
It was tucked away out of sight, but it has always been there waiting, and feels just as painful. I could be wrong about that, but this was a really insightful animation nonetheless, thank you cudlil!

My best guess on the lore is that purple girl represents aggressive optimism, as well as all the personalities and self images she goes through to find one that works. Grey girl is a consistent but sadder personality that she’s neglected for so long, she’s starting to forget it.

I believe the animations about the relationship between cudlil and the idealized version of herself. The difference between how she and the imaginary version of herself act in each place makes me think that the "idealized" version of her is more funny (puppet), outgoing/confident (no towel above her at the pool), and productive(doing work instead of watching youtube). At the end though, that idealized version starts to become overwhelming and its shown as that version becoming a giant monster.

The grey version of her might be her inner self or a past version of herself, probably the 2nd one because she only appears whenever the game thingy is there, which could be reminding cudlil of how she felt in the past. It might also be showing that this "idealized" version of herself has been a recurring thing.


Anyways, thanks for reminding me of Celeste and damn you for not only making me spend 25 minutes on this instead of my math homework but also making me toil over those damn *tangerine metaphors*

I really like it when stuff like this is portrayed in scenes where they are outside in the sun, it’s showing how it isn’t just on rainy days, it’s always, often times people attribute these feelings to rain or cloudy days, but that’s not the only time that these feelings come around

I know last year when I was in a depth of my depression, and it was during the summer, I just wanted to go to a field of grass, and lie there, slowly rotting away and dying in the sun. But I don’t often see that depicted in stuff

What a beautiful animation! Lots of people have said similar, but here’s my interpretation:

All the different characters are different sides of her. There’s the grey girl, seemingly depressed and withdrawn and who wants to just hide and draw. It seems like this personality has been “shoved in a drawer” to become the sweet, bubbly person she is now, but she finds herself drawn back to it sometimes when she gets burned out. Then there’s also the jokey, bright personality, who she dreams of being all the time. That one isn’t afraid of being at the pool, and doesn’t cower inside. The monster personality seems to be her insecurities/mental health issues/frustration at not being “normal”. It yells at her grey personality, likely for being so miserable and shut off, and then it yells at her again when she finds her happy personality slipping. It’s as if it’s telling her, “You’re not allowed to be unhappy when you’ve come so far! How dare you not appreciate everything you have!”

All in all, animation compliments aside, I think this tells a very common story of burnout and depression. Not to psychoanalyse, but I imagine it’s probably a very personal struggle and I hope you’re feeling well, OP (and anyone else reading this) 💖

Theory: grey girl is the pessimism depression the over whelming thought of dread while the purple girl is optimistic and try’s to always be happy but the character doesn’t want to leave the grey girl not yet

i feel like the grey girl is a past friend who the main character left behind for the purple girl to improve her self-image, but one who she looks back on when she has hard days and wishes she'd made different choices in the past

Here’s what I originally thought this was



Tangerine(purple girl) is a character from a game, the grey girl is Cudlil’s persona in the game. Cudlil abandoned the game later on to focus on her mental health but many times, she remembers Tangerine and who she was, she’s still the grey girl
Tangerine(now the AU name) is about finding yourself and self improvement, but sometimes it’s not an easy task, and sometimes it’s never completed
