Import export code is a unique 10-digit number issued to all importers and exporters. It has a lifetime validity. It is mandatory for all importers and exporters for getting authorisation, licenses and approvals.

The IEC is governed by the Department of DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Once after registering for IEC, your company will be given an IEC code which is similar to the company PAN.
This IEC code does not have any validity and also there is no process of return filings. Any company that deals with import and export activities should have an IEC registration. Without an IEC code, no company can run a business that involves import and export activities.
This import and export code will be helpful to get the clearance from the customs, as well as, from the bank to make any transactions when executing import and export activity.
To register with IEC, we should submit a few mandatory documents, like a company should have a company current account in the name of the company. We should submit a canceled check or else a banker certificate which has the company name, account number, and IFSC code. Also, we should produce office address proof, like a rental agreement, electricity bill, or a utility bill, in the name of the landlord.
Apart from this, we need to submit the basic documents of the company (Company Incorporation Certificate, AOA, MOA) as well as information on the directors of the company.
