I grew with bluegrass in my dad's family and goes back to my ancestors in the 1800s. My grandparents always went to festival's and id go with my dad and mom and my great uncle Bob and his wife Talene played at festivals.. alot of people said back in the 40s and 50s and after that that Bob was the best fiddle player in texas. Im so proud to say i grew up in my grandparents living room and i live right next door to my grandma.. my great uncle and aunt passed away only a couple months apart back in 2013. And my papa passed in 2010 when I was 13. He played guitar and my dad still plays guitar and banjo and harmonica. and ive heard this song lots of times. I now play guitar and am fixing to learn the fiddle. I'm the only person in my whole family that wants to carry on bluegrass and folk music. Along with my dad and my Fiance. Seeing this video made me so happy 😍

Thanks. First song I ever learned when I started bluegrass. It only made sense to play it in this style. :)

It all depends on what style you plan on playing. Open back is usually played with clawhammer (no picks) and resonator is usually played with Blue Grass style and fingerpicks. I will tell you that a resonator banjo in a case weighs a ton and needs a strap. A lightweight goodtime openback banjo is easily balanced and no strap. You can't beat a good deering goodtime openback banjo. Even if I want to play with picks, I can play this thing. It's not very loud but good for by yourself.

Couldn't keep my ol' left foot still. That's a good sign.
Really enjoyed it. Good job!

congratulations. That is awesome. I use my middle finger, but there are many who choose to use their first finger. I would suggest for you to use whatever feels good.

I’m a 3 fingerpickin’ kinda banjo player but I love the sound of a clawhammer banjo.
