Of the 156 U-boats that surrendered to the allies at the end of the war, 116 were scuttled as part of Operation Deadlight. The Royal Navy carried out the operation, and planned to tow the submarines to three areas about 100 miles (160 km) north-west of Ireland and sink them. The areas were codenamed XX, YY, and ZZ. They intended to use XX as the main scuttling area, while towing 36 boats to ZZ to use as practice targets for aerial attack. YY was to be a reserve position where, if the weather was good enough, they could divert submarines from XX to sink with naval forces.Submarines that were not used for target practice were to be sunk with explosive charges, with naval gunfire as a fall-back option if that failed.

When Operation Deadlight began, the navy found that many of the U-boats were in poor condition from being moored in exposed harbours while awaiting disposal. These issues, combined with poor weather, sank 56 of the boats before they reached the scuttling areas, and those that did reach the area were generally sunk by gunfire rather than explosive charges. The first sinking took place on 17 November 1945 and the last on 11 February 1946.

505 was not an end of war acquisition. It was captured along with the onboard enigma coding machine.

U505 was the first enemy warship the US Navy captured since the War of 1812. It was captured in the North Atlantic in mid-1944.

Some of the surrendered u-boats were expended as training targets, and a few were used as targets for experimental ASW weapons like SUBROC. Type XXI boats were studied as part of the GUPPy programs (Greater Underwater Propulsive Power). The shape of the hull of the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) is similar to a Type-XXI. The USN also studied German battery technology as part of GUPPy. The U.S. Navy was very unimpressed by German air-independent motors, unlike the British, who raised U-1407 to study its hydrogen peroxide turbine. The Royal Navy later built two subs that used versions of U-1407's powerplant. They were nicknamed HMS Exploder and HMS Exasperator. Nuff said.

The U2513 was captured by the Dutch, given to the English, then given to the U.S.A. An American crew experimented on it, and it became the blueprint for American submarines.

Chicago's U-Boat wasn't surrendered it was taken by force. Which is how we roll.

Ive been in the sub in Chicago. I lived north of Chicago in Libertyville. I happen to have spent 5 days in a sub while in the US Navy
. The difference is dramatic.

Love submarines! Can't get enough of them and respect the crews on them.

Not scraping them, and using the steel in them to rebuild Europe after the war was a grave mistake.

No mention of the revolutionary Type XXI? It was far advanced beyond anything the Allies had at the end of the war.

Growing up I was lucky to live near Admiral Gallery, the skipper of the ship that captured the U505. Great storyteller.

Canada captured a couple and used them for a time. The periscope from U-190 is installed in the three story high Crow's Nest naval club in St. John's Newfoundland and you can go there, buy a rum and check out the city through the eyes of Hans-Erwin Reith

The German U boats built towards the end of the war were influential on post war American subs

It's scary how powerful the German military machine was. It wasn't for the massive industrial prowess of the United States Europe would have been screwed.

Admiral Gallery and his task force were given the job of capturing a U-Boat to get an Enigma machine. Forced to the surface Navy personnel boarded 505 closed the scuttling valves and deactivated the German demolition charges. U-505 was taken under tow and saved for study.

Scuttling these U Boats is at the least a waste of steel.
