This is brilliant advice. There was one time where I lost a ton of sleep over a mix because of the rough ref and how loud it was. Really knocked me off my game and led to a dark reckoning. Been doing this ever since and have saved my sanity.

I mix beats for a friend of mine, and like a classic beat producer he slams everything, and this is exactly what I had to do to even compare to his roughs. They always felt better until I actually matched them. Then you can hear what your hard work is actually doing for the music.

I have a very different problem. I produce. The MC returns the vocal file, then I mix and master. He doesn't care about volume but he complains about reverb and delay. Now I tend to just add a tiny bit of delay from a tape plugin, tiniest bit and a reverb that usually has a very average tail and a tiny blend, usually around 6% in the mix. We're talking barely audible, just so it's not dry. If it isn't sitting where I want in the mix I might put extra but I'm talking about subtle, not if I decide to go wild. He always says, I don't like that reverb effect and the other is, the bass has gone from my voice. What I find is artists like it when it's all muffled but a lot of people don't like the sound of their own voice and when it gets the clarity through mixing and mastering and they can actually hear the qualities of their voice, they don't like it.

An example is I actually had a bit of a dip in the instrumental in the upper lows and his vocal had a little bump there. So actually there was more bass in his voice but because it had space and wasn't being muffled in with the songs bass line, he thought I had cut the bass. In this instance the HPF roll off was pretty damn low too, so definitely more bass in his voice not less but cos it was clear low end, he didn't like it.

Holy shit dude. All my life I thought people were saying “rough mix.” It’s actually “ref mix”?! Now it makes sense.
